“Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall in no wise enter therein.” (Luke 18:17)
I used to believe I was a very patient person. I always bragged about it to myself, during my inner self talk. It used to be one of my most treasured attributes. Well, it used to be until I became not just a father but a dad.
I am a dad to two very astute and extremely agile young men, both of whom are toddlers. Ryan, the older of my two kids, was the first to be birthed five years ago, while Idara, his younger brother and partner in all mischiefs, is soon to be four. Together they form a formidable army against all forms authority, control, boundaries and rules in our home. In fact, they rule!
When I became their proud dad my reality struck me hard in the face. Those young men can really make the most patient person fret. They have a well taught up recipe that drives patience away from any living saint. It took me time to finally realize that their recipe was heavenly, God-sent and divine.
I realize that my perceived patience was built with a pack of cards on a very faulty foundation of self. But when my kids began to pull my strings, my pack of cards came crumbling down. I was in a dilemma until I buried self and realized that God was actually using my kids to draw my attention from self to Him. Now, my patience is so firmly rooted in God that it would take a hurricane to shake it.
This, doesn’t mean I don’t lose it anymore (I’m still human), instead I know where to tap the strength to maintain my patience even in the face great turmoil.
